Crucible CPM® 20CV™ Powder Steel

Steel CPM® 20CV™ (aka Duratech CV20) is a high-chromium, high-vanadium, corrosion-resistant powder steel produced by Crucible Industries (USA). Recently, the alloy (and analogues, for example M390 ) are gaining popularity on serial and designer knives. And deservedly so - this steel combines high cutting edge durability (with a hardness of HRc 62-63, it is approximately one and a half times better than CPM S30V at 61-62) with good corrosion resistance and decent mechanics.

CPM20CV guarantees high impact strength and is able to withstand "heavy" work in extreme conditions. In addition, the steel has an aggressive cut. Among the disadvantages - it is somewhat more difficult to process; for a good result during heat treatment, cryotreatment is required.

The steel is made using amorphous metal alloy technology, better known among knife manufacturers and hobbyists under the abbreviation CPM (Crucible Particle Metallurgy). The CPM process produces very uniform, high-quality steel that has superior stability, uniformity and toughness compared to traditional heat-produced steels.

Powder high-speed steel was developed in the late 60s of the last century in Sweden. The powder metallurgy method makes it possible to introduce more alloying elements into steel without reducing strength and workability.

Powdered steel, unlike ordinary steel, is fed in molten form through a special nozzle through a stream of liquid nitrogen. The steel quickly hardens into small particles. The result is a powder with a uniform arrangement of carbides (the place where carbides accumulate is the place where cracks nucleate). Carbides perform the same function in steel as cobblestones on the street: they (carbides) are harder than the steel surrounding them and help increase its wear resistance.

The resulting powder is sifted and placed in a steel container, in which a vacuum is created. Next, the contents of the container are sintered at high temperature and pressure, thereby achieving uniformity of the material. This process is called hot isostatic pressing. After this, the steel is pressure treated. The result is a high-speed steel with very small carbide particles evenly distributed in the steel base. The resulting steel can be rolled in the traditional way, just like commercial steel grades, resulting in increased strength.

Differences in the wear resistance of different grades of powder steel are explained by the presence of different carbides in their composition in different proportions and with different uniformity of distribution throughout the entire volume of steel. Of two steels that have approximately the same hardness, the one that contains more carbides or is harder will be more wear-resistant.

Steel composition:

C 1.9% - the carbon content in the alloy is 1.9%. Carbon is the most important element in steel; it increases its strength and gives the metal good hardness.

Cr 20% - the chromium content in the alloy is 20%. Chrome is a grayish-white, shiny, hard metal. Chromium affects the ability of steel to harden, gives the alloy anti-corrosion properties and increases its wear resistance. Contained in stainless steel of any grade.

Mo 1.0% - the molybdenum content in the alloy is 1.0%. Molybdenum is a silvery-white metal. Molybdenum is a hard-melting element; it prevents the blade from becoming brittle and brittle, giving it the necessary rigidity and making it quite resistant to high temperatures.

V 4.0% - the vanadium content in the alloy is 4.0%. Vanadium is a greyish-white shiny metal with great hardness. It is responsible for elasticity and enhances the properties of chromium, making the metal inert to aggressive chemical environments.

W 0.6% - tungsten content in the alloy is 0.6%. Tungsten is a light gray metal. The most refractory metal, has a melting point tmelt = 3380 °C. Used to create alloys with high strength. Tungsten is used as one of the main components or alloying elements in the production of high-speed steels.


Acrylic for knife handle 

Inlace Acrylester bars are a new composite material made in the USA and optimized for the production of cutting tool handles and decorative inlays. It is perfectly amenable to mechanical processing - drilling, milling, grinding and polishing. Inlace Acrylester material is quite hard and durable, but at the same time has a high degree of elasticity, which guarantees a minimal risk of damage during manufacturing and operation. The density of the material is 1.25 g/cm3. (If the size of the bar is 130x40x25mm, it weighs about 160 grams). Inlace Acrylester artificial stone products retain their excellent appearance and high-quality surface polishing due to their high hardness and resistance to abrasion and mechanical loads. After polishing, the surface acquires a pearly luster and depth of color and looks stunning. Inlace Acrylester material does not absorb water and is resistant to the harmful effects of the external environment (water, acid, alkali, oils, solvents, ultraviolet light, etc.). Handles made of Inlace Acrylester are tactilely very comfortable and do not slip in the hand. 

 

Advantages of knives with acrylic handles

Acrylic is a synthetic material. This polymer has high strength, it does not interact with water and does not rot, and at the same time it has a low weight. Therefore, knife handles made of acrylic will be convenient for all knife connoisseurs. Also, the cost of acrylic handles is much lower than hornbeam knife handles, which affects the final cost of the knives.

The acrylic handle does not weigh down the knife, and at the same time, this material is very durable. Both hornbeam and acrylic handles have low thermal conductivity, so using them at low temperatures can be as comfortable as possible.

But acrylic handles look more colorful and cost much less than hornbeam, which is why they are most often found on modern knives.


WHAT ARE MICARTA AND G10 AND HOW THESE COMPOSITE MATERIALS DIFFER FROM EACH OTHER

For decades, Micarta and G10 composite materials have been undisputed leaders in the knife industry, in particular for the production of handles of various complexity. The materials are distinguished by their availability, ease of production and processing, as well as high strength, wear resistance and unpretentiousness in maintenance. Both materials are composite, based on polymer resin, which is supplemented with layers of different types of captive fabric.

Micarta material  is an electrical insulating material consisting of a polymer film (based on cresolaldehyde, phenolaldehyde, xylenolaldehyde resin, or resin from a mixture of phenolic raw materials). It is glued with the help of various electrically insulating papers, fabric (mainly linen of natural or artificial origin), or other materials of a similar structure, there are also options made of fiberglass and carbon fiber. The color of the material depends on the resin and fabric base used for gluing. Micarta is a relatively soft material and requires careful manual handling. Therefore, it is used in the production of handles for more expensive knives.

Micart is registered as a trademark of the American company Industrial Laminates / Norplex, Inc. (Norplex-Micarta). Its domestic analogue can be considered a material called "Getinax", which is mainly used as a basis for printed circuit boards. The material also has a sheet pressed structure, which consists of a paper base with the addition of phenolaldehyde or epoxy resin impregnation.

Linen-based micarta has a more attractive optical effect when sanding the fibers. After grinding, the surface can be polished or sandblasted. In the first option, the surface of the material will be smooth, silky, warm and pleasant to the touch. And in the second, the material becomes rough and has a matte shade, besides, it is securely held in the hand and does not slip.

Main characteristics of Micarta:

  • increased water resistance;
  • excellent resistance to temperature changes;

G10 material  is a light, hard and fairly stiff composite material with a textured surface, which is mainly used in the manufacture of handles of both folding pocket knives and knives with a fixed blade. This material is created by placing several layers of fiberglass, thoroughly impregnated with epoxy resin, in a special vacuum press, where, under the influence of compression and heat, the resin finally hardens, preserving the structure of the fiberglass.

The G10 material is characterized by good impact resistance, wear resistance, moisture resistance, as well as ease of processing and maintenance. The material can be painted in different colors, including in layers. The surface of G10 can also be polished to a glossy state, or have a rough anti-slip structure, under the influence of a grinding machine or sandblasting.

Key features of the G10:

  • high stability of basic properties during temperature fluctuations;
  • withstands high shock loads, compressive and tensile loads;
  • high overall hydrophobicity and resistance to chemicals;
  • weighs relatively little, in relation to the overall strength and density;
  • low electrical conductivity;
  • can take different forms.

Composite materials G10 and Micarta have almost the same composition and external similarity. At the same time, the G10 material has higher fire resistance, although it is not a non-flammable material, it has higher compressive, bending, impact and tear strength, and it is also simpler and more economical to manufacture. At the same time, G10 is inferior in terms of "stickiness" in wet conditions, and also, tactilely, it feels less "natural".
