Creation process
In the realm of custom knives, the process of making the Damascus Dragon Skin is a meticulous ballet of fire, metal and pure craftsmanship. Craftsmen use a series of specialized techniques that distinguish their work. The approach involves precise temperature control, which guarantees perfect adhesion of each metal part without compromising the integrity of the steel. The characteristic pattern appears thanks to a careful acid etching, revealing complex layers of forged canister steel. The workshop is a sanctuary of traditional anvils and hammers, as well as modern hammers and hydraulic presses, each tool playing a crucial role in transforming raw steel into Dragonhide Damascus.
The process of heat treatment of Damascus steel from dragon skin
Before starting the heat treatment of the Dragon Skin Damascus blade, make sure that its alignment is perfect. Correct any deviations by straightening the blade while it remains flexible, as heat treatment will not correct the bends. Begin by preheating the furnace to a temperature range of 900-950°C (1652-1742°F). After the vane is placed inside, wait for the furnace to reach the desired temperature again before continuing to temper the vane in medium or fast tempering oil. Avoid side-to-side movements when quenching, as this can force colder oil to one side of the blade, increasing the risk of warping. Vertical movements inside the oil are permissible.
After the hardening process, harden the blade to increase its durability. For strong blades, temper at 270°C (518°F) for one hour, and for finer blades a slightly higher temperature of 280°C (536°F) is recommended for the same time. If deformation occurs during heat treatment, the steel can be softened for correction. Accomplish this by allowing it to cool slowly in a heat treatment furnace, typically around 650-700 °C (1202-1292 °F). Also, gently heat the spine with a small hand straightening torch, but be aware that this may affect the final appearance of the blade.
Dragon skin dyeing technique. Damask
Dragon Skin Damascus steel dyeing involves a process similar to traditional hot blueing, requiring the use of a stainless steel vessel with a propane torch to control the temperature. An accurate thermometer is critical for temperature control throughout the process. The necessary chemicals include:
- Sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) 2500g
- Sodium nitrate 500g
- Sodium nitrite 120 g
- Trisodium phosphate 60g
- Water 5 liters
Adjust the amount depending on the size of the tank and add the chemicals gradually as they can significantly increase the temperature of the solution, especially sodium hydroxide. Make sure the tank has high sides to prevent overflow during boiling or foaming. Mark the initial water level for future reference as evaporation occurs during the process.
Suspend the knife blade in the tank with stainless wire, making sure it does not touch the walls or bottom. Change the position of the blade from time to time to ensure even coloring, as temperature fluctuations in the tank can affect the result. Start the process at about 100°C (212°F), boiling usually starts between 110°C (230°F) and 120°C (248°F). Add water carefully as needed, but proceed slowly due to the violent reaction with the hot solution.
Keep a close eye on the color by inspecting the blade often, as shades can change quickly. Desired colors usually appear between 120°C and 130°C (248°F and 266°F). Dragon Skin Damascus Steel is particularly susceptible to dyeing, producing vibrant greens, purples and reds. Over time, the steel will darken to blue and then black before turning brown with rust.
The chemical mixture remains effective as long as it is not overheated, but needs to be replaced when the colors become less vivid. A fine satin finish of 1200 grit provides the best surface for painting, as etched surfaces darken without much color, while polished surfaces provide a different color spectrum. Close the tank securely after use to prevent animals from having access to the solution, which is highly alkaline and can cause serious burns. Always use protective equipment, including a face shield, respirator, and rubber gloves. Rinse the finished product in water and apply a penetrating oil such as Q20 for protection. Note that this type of steel is not as structurally strong as layered damask, so avoid designs with thin, delicate tips.
DISCLAIMER:
The chemical process described above is dangerous and requires careful handling. When interacting with these substances, always wear a face mask and rubber gloves. If you are not completely familiar with the chemicals, their properties, and basic safety protocols, do not attempt this process. Instead, entrust your blade to a qualified professional, such as a gunsmith, for painting. Description of Blade Creation by Bertie Rietveld expressly disclaims any liability for accident, injury or damage that may occur as a result of using these chemicals or following the instructions provided. Your safety is paramount; act with the utmost care and awareness.

CARBON - KNIFE HANDLES FROM THIS PREMIUM MATERIAL
One of the most prestigious and expensive materials for knife handles, in addition to titanium and expensive woods, is a type of carbon fiber, the so-called "carbon". The material is valued for its exceptional lightness, strength and aesthetic beauty.
Carbon (from the English carbon - carbon) is a polymer material with a composite composition, made from interlaced carbon fiber filaments (carbon fibers). These threads are made using epoxy resins. Average material density from 1450 kg/m³ to 2000 kg/m³. The main difference between carbon fiber and other polymers used in the manufacture of knives is its very low weight. It is the weight combined with exceptional strength that gives carbon an advantage over other handle materials: G10 polymer, Micarta, FRN plastic, etc. At the same time, carbon fiber surpasses structural steels in terms of specific strength characteristics. The main qualities of carbon are: high tensile strength, resistance to high temperatures, aggressive environments, slight expansion when heated, high electrical conductivity. Another important feature of carbon fiber is its natural black color obtained during production, which gives it a noble and elite appearance.
