CPM Rex 121. Powdered steel Crucible CPM® Rex® 121®
CPM® REX® 121 (Crucible Industries LLC) is a high vanadium and cobalt tool steel designed to achieve the high wear resistance, hardness and redness found in high speed steels. Its excellent red hardness (red hardness is a characteristic of the heat resistance of steel, indicating the ability of steel to maintain high hardness and wear resistance obtained as a result of heat treatment when heated to red heat temperatures) provides a higher cutting speed compared to other quick cutters. Excellent wear resistance (due to high vanadium content) helps maintain edge sharpness at higher cutting speeds.
Powdered high speed steel was developed in Sweden in the late 60s of the last century. The powder metallurgy method makes it possible to introduce more alloying elements into the steel without reducing the strength and machinability.
Powder steel, unlike ordinary steel, is fed in molten form through a special nozzle through a stream of liquid nitrogen. Steel quickly hardens into small particles. The result is a powder with a uniform arrangement of carbides (the place of accumulation of carbides is the place where cracks originate). Carbides perform the same function in the composition of steel as cobblestones on the street: they (carbides) are harder than the steel surrounding them, and contribute to its increase in wear resistance.
The resulting powder is sieved and placed in a steel container in which a vacuum is created. Next, the contents of the container are sintered at high temperature and pressure - thus achieving material homogeneity. This process is called hot isostatic pressing. The steel is then pressure treated. The result is a high speed steel with very small carbide particles evenly distributed in the steel substrate. The resulting steel can be rolled in the traditional way, as well as serial grades of steel, resulting in its increased strength.
Differences in the wear resistance of different grades of powder steel are explained by the presence of different carbides in their composition in different proportions and with different distribution uniformity throughout the steel volume. Of two steels having approximately the same hardness, the more wear-resistant will be the one in which there are more carbides or they are harder.
CPM REX 121 bridges the gap between high alloy tool steels and carbide materials (tungsten carbide, which is second only to diamond in hardness). Can be used in cutting tools where high cutting speeds require higher heat resistance but carbide tools are too brittle, or in high wear resistant tools (dies) where carbide tools are also too brittle.
CPM Rex 121 was developed in 1998. In terms of hardness, this is truly a champion, able to reach a hardness of 70-72 HRC. For information, officially the Rockwell C scale has a maximum value of 70 HRC.
Also extremely high wear resistance. Difficult to grind and therefore difficult to sharpen. Sharpening this grade can be a nightmare even at 68HRC and will be exponentially harder at higher hardness. With so many alloying elements, there are many carbides in steel, and some of them are not very small. The steel works best with a rough cut (the photo below shows a comparison of the microstructures of popular steel grades and the microstructure of CPM Rex 121).
There are many hard steels in the world, but according to renowned knifemaker Gary Creely, the REX 121 takes them to the next level. “The steel has a low Rockwell hardness of 40 even after annealing, and after heat treatment it is close to 70 HRC.” The steel is described as a response from Crucible's rival Carpenter CTS steel - Maxamet Micro-Melt Alloy. Although they are very similar in chemical composition, REX 121 contains 1% more carbon and 3% more vanadium. The practical result of this hardness value is unprecedented sharpness retention. REX 121 knives will far outperform even other high quality steels such as M4 and S35VN.
Steel does not have high impact resistance and can break under abuse, but Creely believes excellent edge retention is more beneficial than the high strength in the small knives we carry every day. “Such steel is best suited for smaller knives. If the REX 121 finds its way to a larger blade, the chances of it being misused will skyrocket."
The disadvantage of REX 121 is that it is so hard that it can damage conventional abrasives. “In short, you need to use diamond abrasives to sharpen this kind of steel,” notes Creeley. "If you choose your favorite Japanese water stone, there's a good chance that steel will cut your water stone harder than the stone will sharpen steel."
The composition of a hundred:
- the carbon content in the alloy is 3.4%. Carbon is the most important element in steel, it increases its strength and gives the metal good hardness.
- Cr 4.0% - the chromium content in the alloy is 4.0%. Chromium is a greyish-white lustrous hard metal. Chromium affects the ability of steel to harden, gives the alloy anti-corrosion properties and increases its wear resistance. Contained in stainless steel of any brand.
- Mo 5.0% - the content of molybdenum in the alloy is 5.0%. Molybdenum is a silvery white metal. Molybdenum is a hard-melting element, it prevents brittleness and brittleness of the blade, giving it the necessary rigidity, making it sufficiently resistant to high temperatures.
- V 9.5% - the content of vanadium in the alloy is 9.5%. Vanadium is a grayish-white lustrous metal with great hardness. It is responsible for elasticity and enhances the properties of chromium, makes the metal inert to aggressive chemical environments.
- W 10.0% C The tungsten content of the alloy is 10.0%. Tungsten is a light gray metal. The most refractory metal, has a melting point tmelt = 3380 °C. It is used to create alloys with high strength. Tungsten is used as one of the main components or alloying element in the production of high speed steels.
- Co 9.0% - the cobalt content in the alloy is 9.0%. Cobalt is a silvery-white, slightly yellowish metal with a pinkish or bluish tint. Increases heat resistance, improves mechanical properties. From alloys using cobalt, a processing tool is created: drills, cutters, etc. etc.
- S 0.03 - 0.12% - sulfur content in the alloy - 0.03 - 0.12%. Sulfur, like phosphorus, refers to harmful technological impurities in steels and alloys. An increase in the sulfur content significantly reduces the mechanical and physicochemical properties of steels, in particular, ductility, impact strength, abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance. The limits of sulfur content as a process impurity are 0.035...0.06%. Due to the extremely fine and uniform microstructure of CPM (Crucible Particle Metallurgy's proprietary powder metallurgy process), sulfur can be added if desired to improve machinability. The higher sulfur content benefits the tool maker by making it easier to manufacture and the tool user by making it easier to resharpen. The CPM process ensures that additional sulfur does not adversely affect tool strength.

WHAT ARE MICARTA AND G10 AND HOW THESE COMPOSITE MATERIALS DIFFER FROM EACH OTHER
For decades, Micarta and G10 composite materials have been undisputed leaders in the knife industry, in particular for the production of handles of various complexity. The materials are distinguished by their availability, ease of production and processing, as well as high strength, wear resistance and unpretentiousness in maintenance. Both materials are composite, based on polymer resin, which is supplemented with layers of different types of captive fabric.
Micarta-G10-Composite-materials-photo-2
Micarta material is an electrical insulating material consisting of a polymer film (based on cresolaldehyde, phenolaldehyde, xylenolaldehyde resin, or resin from a mixture of phenolic raw materials). It is glued with the help of various electrically insulating papers, fabric (mainly linen of natural or artificial origin), or other materials of a similar structure, there are also options made of fiberglass and carbon fiber. The color of the material depends on the resin and fabric base used for gluing. Micarta is a relatively soft material and requires careful manual processing. Therefore, it is used in the production of handles for more expensive knives.
Micart is registered as a trademark of the American company Industrial Laminates / Norplex, Inc. (Norplex-Micarta). Its domestic analogue can be considered a material called "Getinax", which is mainly used as a basis for printed circuit boards. The material also has a sheet pressed structure, which consists of a paper base with the addition of phenolaldehyde or epoxy resin impregnation.
Linen-based micarta has a more attractive optical effect when sanding the fibers. After grinding, the surface can be polished or sandblasted. In the first option, the surface of the material will be smooth, silky, warm and pleasant to the touch. And in the second, the material becomes rough and has a matte shade, besides, it is securely held in the hand and does not slip.
Main characteristics of Micarta:
increased water resistance;
excellent resistance to temperature changes;
strength to mechanical processing;
dense structure that does not absorb odors;
the micro-relief of the material does not slip in the hand even when the surface is wet;
tight fit to the blade, which leaves no gaps at all and prevents food residues and harmful microorganisms from accumulating.
G10 material is a light, hard and fairly stiff composite material with a textured surface, which is mainly used in the manufacture of handles of both folding pocket knives and knives with a fixed blade. This material is created by placing several layers of fiberglass, thoroughly impregnated with epoxy resin, in a special vacuum press, where, under the influence of compression and heat, the resin finally hardens, preserving the structure of the fiberglass.
The G10 material is characterized by good impact resistance, wear resistance, moisture resistance, as well as ease of processing and maintenance. The material can be painted in different colors, including in layers. The surface of G10 can also be polished to a glossy state, or have a rough anti-slip structure, under the influence of a grinding machine or sandblasting.
Key features of the G10:
high stability of basic properties during temperature fluctuations;
withstands high shock loads, compressive and tensile loads;
high overall hydrophobicity and resistance to chemicals;
weighs relatively little, in relation to the overall strength and density;
low electrical conductivity;
can take different forms.
Composite materials G10 and Micarta have almost the same composition and external similarity. At the same time, the G10 material has higher fire resistance, although it is not a non-flammable material, it has higher compressive, bending, impact and tear strength, and it is also simpler and more economical to manufacture. At the same time, G10 is inferior in terms of "stickiness" in wet conditions, and also, tactilely, it feels less "natural".

Stabilized moray hornbeam
Moraine hornbeam что такое. The hornbeam deciduous tree and its unusual properties
Description
Characteristics of wood
Black hornbeam
Before using any types of fasteners, preliminary drilling of the material is required. It perfectly holds screws and nails, which is well suited for securing furniture joints and complex parts.
When using fresh wood in everyday use, it is recommended to cut and turn the product until the material is dry - in this form, it is easier to process it.
Despite its natural high density and wear resistance, hornbeam is considered a rather complex and impractical breed, as it gets wet quickly, is susceptible to fungus and other biological pathogens. Without additional pickling and finishing, it cannot be used and is not suitable for outdoor work either. The twisted structure of the fibers and the low ability to glue do not allow the use of hornbeam as a structural building material: plywood or glued timber. They are not used for outdoor work. Indoors, the hornbeam surface should be covered with protective impregnations and thick layers of varnish. Do not use the material in rooms with high humidity.
Areas and features of application
This wood finds its purpose where resistance to shock loads is required: in the production of decorative elements, mechanism parts, sports items. It is made from:
golf clubs, billiard cues;
weaving shuttles;
agricultural implements;
bodies and elements of necks of violins, guitars, details of grand pianos, other musical instruments;
cutting boards, knife handles;
boxes, toys, souvenirs, frames for pictures, panels and photographs;
furniture, parquet, interior design details.
Due to its noble light-pearl color and strength, hornbeam wood has a high artistic value and is used in the creation of mosaic patterns, friezes and decorative elements.
Parts of air propellers in aircraft construction are made from hornbeam.
On average, the price of 1 m³ of wood, depending on the manufacturer, is 645–800 dollars.
It is believed that furniture or decoration made of this type of wood relieves fatigue, gives physical strength, helps to coordinate thoughts and actions, and to get rid of a bad mood.
Black hornbeam
The light structure of the tree with a subtle natural pattern makes it attractive for the manufacture of various imitations. By the method of etching the material, black hornbeam is obtained, which in terms of properties and appearance is similar to ebony wood. Nigrosins are used for high-quality coloring - special mixtures based on aniline, nitrobenzene and hydrochloric acid, dissolved in water or alcohol. They give the material a clean, bright color that is not afraid of direct sunlight. Professional etching involves painting through the entire thickness of the material, and not surface application of paint. Self-etching wood is not recommended, as when using self-burning chemical dyes, it may lose strength, become loose, or stain unevenly. Artfully made black hornbeam imitation ebony has a very dark purple shade that does not burn out and does not fade over time, does not smear when mechanically exposed to the surface. Black hornbeam is sold in small batches in the form of small bars.
