Steel DI103-MP (P12M3K5F2-MP). Composition and properties.

Steel brand DI103-MP (Р12М3К5Ф2-MP) is high-speed powder steel from the Ukrainian company Dniprospetsstal (Zaporizhia). If we decipher the name itself, then D is a manufacturing plant, I is an experimental plant, and MP is powder metallurgy. The main purpose of Art. DI103-MP: shaped cutters, drills, countersinks, reamers, milling cutters, etc. for processing high-strength, heat-resistant steels and alloys. The hardness of DI103-MP steel is 64-66 HRC or slightly higher. The microstructure is uniform. It is considered a very good steel for the production of designer knives and blades. It has good wear resistance and satisfactory impact strength. Holds sharpening very decently, gives an interesting aggressive cut. Due to its low corrosion resistance, the DI103-MP knife blade requires attention and care.

I don't know where the myth came from that DI103-MP has not been produced since the time of the USSR - this respected steel is made in Ukraine, from where it was successfully sold and is sold in many countries of the world.

PROPERTIES OF STEEL ELEMENTS:

Carbon (C, Carbon):  improves edge retention and increases viscosity; increases hardness and wear resistance; reduces plasticity; in high values, it reduces corrosion resistance.

Chromium (Cr, Chromium):  increases hardness, tensile strength and density; increase corrosion resistance (>11% makes the alloy stainless).

Manganese (Mn, Manganese)  : increases flammability, wear resistance and viscosity; used as a deoxidizer and degasser to remove oxygen during metal melting; in large % increases hardness and brittleness.

Molybdenum (Mo, Molybdenum)  : increases hardness, strength, calcination and density; improves machinability and corrosion resistance.

Nickel (Ni, Nickel):  adds impact toughness; improves corrosion resistance; reduces hardness.

Phosphorus (P, Phosphorus):  is considered a harmful impurity. It dissolves in ferrite, due to this, the strength increases, but the plasticity and impact strength decrease with an increase in the susceptibility of steel to brittleness. In low-alloy steels with about 0.1% carbon, phosphorus increases strength and resistance to atmospheric corrosion. It is considered a harmful impurity.

Silicon (Si, Silicon)  : increases strength; used as a deoxidizer and degasser to remove oxygen during metal melting.

Sulfur (S, Sulfur):  is usually considered a harmful impurity that affects plasticity, impact toughness, weldability, corrosion properties, surface quality of steel, etc. The harmful effect of sulfur reduces the presence of manganese in steel. The sulfur content in quality steels does not exceed 0.02-0.03%.

Vanadium (V, Vanadium):  increases strength, wear resistance, increases density and viscosity; increases corrosion resistance by increasing the oxide film; vanadium carbide inclusions are very hard.

Tungsten (W, Tungsten):  adds strength, viscosity and improves firing; retains hardness at high temperatures.

Cobalt (Co, Cobalt):  increases strength and hardness, allows hardening at higher temperatures; enhances the effects of other elements in complex steels.

Niobium (Nb, Niobium)  : limits the growth of carbides; limits workability; creates the hardest carbides.

Nitrogen (N, Nitrogen)  : used instead of carbon in the steel matrix (nitrogen atoms function similarly to carbon atoms, but have advantages in corrosion resistance).

 Stabilized whale vertebra

Whales have the so-called spongy skeleton. The spine of cetaceans consists of four sections: short cervical (its length is 15 cm and consists of 7 vertebrae), thoracic, lumbar and caudal. Intervertebral discs give the spine flexibility and great mobility. The pectoral fin rests exclusively on the short humerus.

Ironwood - iron wood - handmade knives

Ironwood - Iron tree

iron tree

In nature, ironwood is extremely rare, therefore it occupies an honorable place in the Red Book. However, in terms of its properties, each iron tree is not inferior to the density of cast iron. Its bark can withstand gunfire, but it sinks hopelessly in water. It is worth noting that this is not a separate class of trees, but a whole group assembled from different species. It includes several dozen species of plants with unusually dense wood. They can be found on every continent. Moreover, raw materials are used both in the industrial industry and in medical practice.

What is special about these trees?

ironwood floor

With the naked eye, it is quite difficult to recognize the "stone" breed of a perennial plant. Especially if they are on the verge of extinction. However, they are characterized by the following features:

  • the age of such long-lived people is not less than 2 hundred years;
  • wood fiber is resistant to corrosion processes and does not deteriorate under the influence of strong acids;
  • the bark contains many tannins that protect their "hosts" from all kinds of parasites, as well as from the rot fungus;
  • the log will definitely go under water, since the density of wood is 1 t / m³, taking into account the humidity of 12%, for this reason, such breeds grow quite slowly;
  • the height of each exceeds 25 meters, and the girth of the trunk reaches more than 200 cm.

huge trunk

All these properties are necessary for an iron tree to survive in the harshest climatic conditions. Sharp temperature changes in Russia, African drought or humid European climate will not be able to harm this natural phenomenon. Such varieties of trees perfectly adapt to any adverse environment. For this, they are equipped with a considerable number of devices, starting from the unique structure of the trunk / roots and ending with the chemical composition of the bark. In this regard, they are widely used in production:

  • furniture;
  • building structures;
  • cars;
  • cosmetics;
  • decorative elements;
  • underwater equipment.

Mammoth Tusk: A Jewel Mined in Permafrost

Most of our contemporaries mammoth – “a monster round, mischievous, huge…” A large, disproportionately built elephant. A ferocious beast, densely overgrown with dense shiny or long brown and patchy wool. A four-legged hero with heavy tusks at the ready, fearlessly chasing polar bears. Or running away in confusion from a handful of crazy bipeds… That’s what a mammoth is in the performance of artists from science.
Mammoths – are they extinct?

It is generally accepted that mammoths lived as long ago as dinosaurs. However, scientists have reliably established: the last herds of mammoths lived on Wrangel Island about three and a half millennia ago. The Pyramid of Cheops was already over a thousand years old at that time. Moses was preparing his tribesmen for a forty-year dessert trip. The Mediterranean volcano Santorini, having erupted, buried the Mycenaean civilization a hundred years ago.

These are herds; individual families of mammoths, according to the assurances of lovers of polar hunting solitude, exist safely to this day. Whether this is true or not is not known for certain. However, there is no doubt that in the past mammoths lived everywhere in Europe, Asia, and America.

Permafrost is the best refrigerator for mammoth bone

Mammoth bone cemeteries are found everywhere: in France, in the Czech Republic, in Ukraine. But only where the land has been in a state of permafrost for thousands of years, mammoth tusks are preserved in their original (or almost original) form. One of the largest burials in the world is Yakutia, where a large amount of this highly valuable material is still mined annually. According to experts in the North Yakutsk province, the potential resources could be about 450 thousand tons.

Man has always valued the fossilized tusk of a mammoth. Dense, strong, massive, often white, usually yellowish, often colored with mineral salts in natural colors, mammoth bone has been used as a raw material for bone carving for many centuries.

A material that is valued by kings and rulers all over the world!

Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great, introduced a state monopoly on mammoth bone in the mid-seventeenth century. On his initiative, the extraction and supply of mammoth tusks to the bone-cutting workshops of Kholmogory and Moscow (Armorial Chamber) became stable.

Peter the Great, fascinated by crafts, carved a snuffbox from mammoth bone himself. Foreign craftsmen also liked the material: among the goods traditionally shipped from Russia to the West, there was always a place for the bone of an extinct animal.

The only one allowed

Today, mammoth tusk is the only high-value bone material permitted for extraction and use. Elephant tusk, commonly known as ivory, has been moved to the category of prohibited materials. Similar decisions have been made regarding sperm whale tooth (due to the complete abandonment of whaling) and walrus tusk (which is mined by northern peoples in small quantities).

Elk antler and femur (the tubular thigh bone of large animals) are not able to give the visual effect produced by products made of mammoth bone. The internal glow of the figures, the warm shades of a living body, the unsurpassed plasticity of the smallest details - these are just some of the advantages inherent in mammoth tusk.

Universality, nobility, uniqueness

The physical qualities of mammoth tusk are unique. Modern technologies are only trying to create substances that are close in properties to natural mammoth bone. Allowing for the finest detailing, allowing the illusion of soft draperies that naturally fall, mammoth tusk has deservedly become the most sought-after material for bone carving.

A mammoth tusk with a uniform structure is in particular demand. The uniformity of the color of the bone mass, the absence of cracks and other defects allows the artist to create regardless of the quality of the material. However, the integrity of the mammoth bone mass is now a rarity and the defects of the material force the artist to be more inventive in the composition, which ultimately turns into an additional advantage in the sculpture.

The demand for bone products has existed for centuries. Large sculptures made of mammoth tusk make it possible to emphasize the high status of their owner. Cold weapons decorated with bone inserts are a wonderful gift for lovers of hunting, fishing or collectors.

mammoth tusk products

Moreover, mammoth tusk in the process of mineralization can acquire different shades from milky white to blue-violet, which gives tusk products a special uniqueness and exclusivity. High demand for products also gives rise to high demand for raw materials. Nowadays, the only animals that have tusks with a sufficiently large cross-section, suitable for the manufacture of large-sized sculptures, are elephants, but the elephant population is rapidly decreasing year by year, even despite the fight against poaching. Thus, the only alternative to using elephant tusk today is a fossil mammoth tusk. An interesting fact is that scientists predict the cloning of mammoths in the next 20-25 years, and well-preserved mammites can already be found at the best zoological exhibitions in the world.
