Steel N690: composition, interpretation and application
Features of steel N690
Martensitic alloy steel N690 is produced by the Vohleg-Uddeholm Gmbh&C corporation, which has its enterprises in Austria, Germany, South and North America. Another name for the alloy is Austrian cobalt stainless steel. Due to its high quality and operational characteristics and advantages, it is successfully implemented in many countries of the world for the manufacture of knives and other purposes.
Steel is produced by electroslag smelting technology. It has a uniformly distributed carbide structure of the crystal lattice in the absence of harmful impurities. As a result of heat treatment and forging, the impact toughness of the material increases without loss of hardness. The presence of alloying additives in the chemical composition of steel ensures resistance to corrosion.
Field of application
Steel is recognized as a good material for serial production of long-range and tactical knives, the technical characteristics of which allow operation in difficult and extreme conditions. Blades made of N690 steel are able to withstand not only longitudinal, but also strong lateral loads when acting on bends and twists.
Due to its resistance to corrosion and aggressive environments, steel is used in the manufacture of diving knives, harpoons for spearfishing and other sports equipment.
This steel is used in the manufacture of knives by such well-known European brands as Vokeg, Spyderco, Vepshmade and Echthema Ratio. Manufactured blades have excellent cutting properties, are strong, durable, sharpen well and hold an edge. The presence of alloying elements in the composition ensured high corrosion resistance while maintaining plasticity. If necessary, there is a possibility of thermal hardening up to 60 NKR.
The technical and physical characteristics of the alloy allow it to be used in mechanical engineering for the manufacture of tools, milling cutters, drills, parts of bearings and relevant components operating under high mechanical loads. The steel is highly wear resistant and can be heat treated.
Resistance to the effects of moisture and chemicals allows the use of steel in the food and pharmaceutical industry for the manufacture of cutting tools and grinders. At the same time, the ecological purity of the material and the complete absence of impurities are taken into account.
ANALOGUES
According to its composition, steel N690 is a close analogue of Russian steel 95X18, German X102SgMo17, Japanese / (3-10 and A115-10, French 2100СО17, American 440 С. In Sweden, an analogue of Sandvic 12С27 is produced.
Storage
Steel N690 contains:
■ 1.08% carbon (C), which gives the material hardness and increases strength;
■ 17.3% chromium (Cg) to obtain anti-corrosion properties, increase wear resistance and change hardening conditions;
■ 1.1% molybdenum (Mo) to reduce brittleness, increase plasticity and resistance to high temperatures;
■ 0.1% vanadium (V) to increase metal elasticity and inertness to aggressive media;
■ 1.5% cobalt (C) increases heat resistance and improves mechanical properties;
■ 0.4% manganese (Mp) increases hardness;
■ 0.4% silicon (5|) to improve alloy stability and increase wear resistance.
The presence of cobalt in the chemical composition of the metal makes the crystal structure of N690 more uniform and resistant to mechanical loads.
PROS AND CONS OF N690 STEELS FOR KNIVES
The use of Austrian N690 steel allows for the production of high-quality stainless knives for various purposes. Due to its physical and technical properties, the material is well processed, capable of heat treatment, is not prone to corrosion and is sold at an affordable price.
5*ee1 N690 is one of the best alloys for making beautiful wear-resistant blades. Simple sharpening and long-term preservation of the sharpness of the edge make use simple and convenient. You will never regret buying or making a knife from this steel.
Types of deliveries
The high quality of Wohler N690 steel is ensured by the use of a unique rolling technology developed by the manufacturer. Metal sheets are subjected to repeated hot processing with rolling in the longitudinal and transverse directions. After that, the material is cold cut into strips.
N690 steel is supplied to the rolled metal market in the form of steel strips 3-5 mm thick, 20-50 mm wide and 250 to 1000 mm long, especially for the manufacture of knives. The cross-section of the strips is rectangular or with a prepared longitudinal bevel, which eliminates the need for blacksmithing when making the blade. The steel may or may not have previous heat treatment.
All of this is very convenient, as it does not require operations to cut large sheets, which allows you to accurately determine the amount of necessary material and reduces the amount of waste.
Strips are sold individually. The price depends on the geometric dimensions of the product, thicknesses and types of preliminary factory processing. For the products of the metalworking industry, we supply a sheet 2-8 mm thick, the size stated in the contract. If necessary, you can order any analogue of steels of type N690. Sheet metal is sold by weight.

Ironwood - iron wood - handmade knives
Ironwood - iron wood - handmade knives
In nature, ironwood is extremely rare, therefore it occupies an honorable place in the Red Book. However, in terms of its properties, each iron tree is not inferior to the density of cast iron. Its bark can withstand gunfire, but it sinks hopelessly in water. It is worth noting that this is not a separate class of trees, but a whole group assembled from different species. It includes several dozen species of plants with unusually dense wood. They can be found on every continent. Moreover, raw materials are used both in the industrial industry and in medical practice.
.
What is special about these trees?
It is quite difficult to recognize the "stone" breed of a perennial plant with the naked eye. Especially if they are on the verge of extinction. However, they are characterized by the following features:
- the age of such long-lived people is not less than 2 hundred years;
- wood fiber is resistant to corrosion processes and does not deteriorate under the influence of strong acids;
- the bark contains many tannins that protect their "hosts" from all kinds of parasites, as well as from the rot fungus;
- the log will definitely go under water, since the density of wood is 1 t / m³, taking into account the humidity of 12%, for this reason, such breeds grow quite slowly;
- the height of each exceeds 25 meters, and the girth of the trunk reaches more than 200 cm.
All these properties are necessary for an iron tree to survive in the harshest climatic conditions. Sharp temperature changes in Russia, African drought or humid European climate will not be able to harm this natural phenomenon. Such varieties of trees perfectly adapt to any adverse environment. For this, they are equipped with a considerable number of devices, starting from the unique structure of the trunk / roots and ending with the chemical composition of the bark. In this regard, they are widely used in production:
- furniture;
- building structures;
- cars;
- cosmetics;
- decorative elements;
- underwater equipment.
Ivory: a material highly valued at all times
First of all, it is worth knowing that the general concept of "ivory" most often refers not only to the tusks of this mammal. This name is often used to combine the fangs of a hippopotamus, a walrus, and narwhal tusks. For example, the tooth of the second largest inhabitant of the terrestrial part of our planet can reach a length of 35 cm and a weight of up to 2 kg. Products made from this material are distinguished by their beautiful whiteness, they almost never turn yellow, but due to their very high density and large internal cavity, a hippopotamus tooth is quite difficult to process, so only small jewelry was made from it.
Of course, it would still be correct to consider elephant tusks directly as ivory. Ivory is distinguished by its high density and unique internal structure. The most vividly conveys the structural pattern in the form of a grid consisting of thin intersecting lines.
The smaller this pattern, the higher the quality of the ivory is considered. A similar pattern is also present in the tusk of a mammoth, but unlike an elephant tusk, which has an internal cavity that occupies almost half of its entire length, the mammoth tusk has this cavity much smaller in depth, so its sculptural part is much larger. The bones of the legs and other skeletons do not have a mesh pattern both on the surface and in the section, the value of such a bone is incomparably lower, since the quality of this manufactured material is significantly inferior in its properties to elephant tusk.
Due to the significant internal cavity of the elephant tusk, only its end and middle part are suitable for creating a sculpture. The hollow part of the tusk is used for relief and openwork carving, the manufacture of carved vases, often the tusk was used entirely, the carving was applied over its entire surface. This type of carving was especially developed in China. Artists invented the most complex compositions and combined relief on the tusks, which sometimes turns into sculptural carving, with through-openwork, such works still amaze viewers with their virtuosity. To make one such carved tusk, it sometimes takes up to 10 years of painstaking work, which is often performed by more than one master.
When evaluating a product, experts pay attention to the smoothness and shine of the material - the latter feature of high-quality bone should be restored when rubbed with suede, silk or soft wool. Another factor affecting the price of an elephant tusk product is the presence of a small hole surrounded by a black border, which characterizes the elephant's achievement of maturity. The pattern and distinction of the middle of an elephant tusk are difficult or almost impossible to find on products made from other parts of the tusk.
Naturally, ivory extracted from a recently deceased animal is of higher value than material from a long-dead mammal. So-called "dead" ivory can be distinguished from the more expensive "live" ivory by its excessive dullness and irregularly shaped spots.
Is the tusk real or fake?
The popularity and high price of ivory products have reached such a scale that many craftsmen have decided to cash in on inexperienced and gullible customers by passing off products made from cheaper materials as original works made from elephant tusk. Real ivory in these regions is recommended to know the main differences between these materials.
It is quite easy to identify a fake tactilely and visually: the product does not have a characteristic mesh pattern, is softer and more oily to the touch, and also has a tendency to turn yellow quickly. Some fraudsters, trying to hide their deception, rub their products in the sun before selling and wrap them in fresh tobacco leaves, imitating the natural patina that forms on ancient works, but even such a trick cannot fool an experienced ivory connoisseur.
The bones of other animals are not the only source of fake ivory products: for this purpose, the hard and white fruits of one of the palm species (Phytelephasmacrocarpa) growing in South America have been adapted; these fruits produce the so-called "vegetable ivory", also made of plaster, resembling the original and capable of deceiving an inexperienced buyer.
The profits from the sale of fakes in the 19th century reached such heights that in some countries this production completely replaced the production of genuine, more expensive and difficult-to-process material.
One way to determine the quality of a product is to wipe it with a cloth soaked in vinegar. Real ivory turns white almost instantly, unlike surrogates. Of course, such a check will not work when evaluating a product made from animal teeth, so in such a situation you will have to rely on visual inspection: animal teeth have a completely different structure than tusk, they are characterized by the presence of several longitudinal layers, the delamination of which can be seen on a product made of this material.
The development of the chemical industry has contributed to the emergence of a large number of artificial materials that are very similar to natural analogues in appearance and a number of properties. However, artificial materials will never be able to truly compete with natural ivory. Based on this, we can confidently guarantee that the value of ivory products, like the bone itself, will always be very high.
Poaching has prompted a complete ban on ivory mining
The value of ivory in the modern world has another reason. At the end of the last century, the UN introduced a moratorium on the killing of elephants and the extraction of their tusks, as well as the sale and purchase of modern works made from this precious material. Of course, everything that is prohibited immediately rises in price. But even a serious fight against poachers does not save the poor animals, whose number is decreasing every year.
The increased extermination of the largest animals on Earth has led to another negative result. Ivory, which is a mammal's tusk, is evaluated according to several criteria, and one of the most important has always been length. But to reach significant sizes, an elephant's tusk needs to live for a long time, which was actively hindered by poachers and hunters who had a license to shoot.
Some countries are trying to lift the UN moratorium, arguing their position to increase the population of valuable mammals. The international organization sometimes meets them, allowing one-time agreements of interested parties to be implemented. However, given the high level of threat of elephants disappearing from our planet, there is a very high probability that such a ban will continue for a fairly long time.
The dependence of the place of origin on the quality of the extracted bone.
Size is not the only advantage of a tusk - there are other characteristics that significantly affect the value, one of which seriously depends on the place of origin and habitat of the huge mammal. The most popular is the bone brought from such countries as: Guinea, Gabon and Angola, it is also called "green bone", it has a yellowish tint, which over the years turns into a pure white color. Tusks of other origins, on the contrary, gradually turn yellow over the years.
The next most important ivory came from the Cape Province of South Africa, and even from Zanzibar and Muscat. The ivory from these regions has a matte surface with a slight yellowish tint.
Africa is not the only supplier of this resource: India has also always had a good income from this craft, which, however, mostly settled in the pockets of the inhabitants of Foggy Albion. Indian bone is usually divided into three categories. The first homeland is the island of Ceylon. The main characteristic is a pink tone or a uniquely white color.
The second category includes a bone from the province of Siam, which is similar to the first, but has a slightly different mesh pattern.
The third type of Indian ivory is Bombay. But this ivory was not a material mined on the peninsula – it got its name from the place where it was sold. In Bombay, at one time, there was a fairly famous market where you could buy products and ivory itself, brought from the African continent, but priced much lower because of its quality.
