Powder steel M398

Powder steel BOHLER M398 MICROCLEAN is a new martensitic steel from the Swedish-Austrian concern Bohler-Uddeholm, which was developed and began production in 2019. The increased content of Chromium provides it with good corrosion resistance, and the increased content of Vanadium provides the steel with extremely high wear resistance. The Carbon content has increased by 30% compared to its predecessor M390 steel and added hardness, which is 63-64 units on the Rockwell scale. Today, M398 steel is considered one of the best powder stainless steels, which speaks for itself not only of its characteristics, but also of its price, which is quite high. Accordingly, be prepared for the fact that the cost of the finished knife cannot be low.

M398 powder steel is produced in accordance with European standards and has the following chemical composition and microstructure (let's look at it in comparison with its predecessor, M390 steel):

Carbon (C, Carbon): is one of the main parts of the steel production process, improves edge retention and increases toughness; increases hardness and wear resistance.

Silicon (Si, Silicon) and Manganese (Mn, Manganese): used as standard deoxidizers and degassers to remove oxygen during metal melting, increase strength.

Chromium (Cr, Chromium): increases corrosion resistance (at values >11% the alloy becomes stainless), increases hardness and density.

Molybdenum (Mo, Molybdenum): increases hardness, strength, hardenability and density; improves machinability and corrosion resistance.

Vanadium (V, Vanadium): increases strength, wear resistance, increases density and viscosity; increases corrosion resistance by increasing the oxide film; Vanadium carbide inclusions are very hard. The presence of this metal in steel indicates its quality.

Tungsten (W, Tungsten): is the most refractory metal of all, used to add strength and toughness, improves hardenability; retains hardness at high temperatures.

Due to the higher amount of primary carbides in M398 steel (about 30 vol.%), the hardness, wear resistance and compressive strength of M398 are significantly increased.

Also, steel M 398 is characterized by the following properties:

  • - high level of corrosion resistance;
  • - high strength;
  • - extremely high wear resistance;
  • - high stability during heat treatment;
  • - good grindability;
  • - good polishability;
  • - high hardenability and compressive strength.

M398 with TO and CRYO sheet

All blanks are hardened in stainless steel foil, which prevents the carbon of the top layer of the blanks from burning out and the formation of scale.

Cold treatment (cryotreatment) was performed.

63-65HRC hardening to primary hardness.

Thus, M398 is highly durable and can withstand quite heavy loads and at the same time retain its edge perfectly. It has excellent anti-corrosion properties and does not react with most alkalis and acids, that is, this steel does not require special care, which makes products made from it a huge plus when used outdoors, hunting, fishing and/or in extreme conditions*. Perhaps the only disadvantage of M398 steel is its cost, which is quite high and you need to be prepared for this.

*It is worth remembering that when using a knife made from M398 for its intended purpose and handling it with care, the knife will serve you for a very, very long time.

Happy shopping!!! We will be glad to see you among our customers!

 Ironwood - iron wood - handmade knives

Ironwood - Ironwood

iron wood

In nature, ironwood is extremely rare, so it occupies an honorable place in the Red Book. However, in its properties, each iron tree is not inferior to the density of cast iron. Its bark can withstand fire from firearms, but at the same time it sinks hopelessly in water. It should be noted that this is not a separate class of trees, but a whole group collected from different species. It includes several dozen species of plants with unusually dense wood. They can be found on every continent. Moreover, raw materials are used both in the industrial industry and in medical practice.

iron wood product

What's special about these trees?

iron wood floor

It is quite difficult to recognize the “stone” species of a perennial plant with the naked eye. Especially if they are on the verge of extinction. However, they are characterized by the following features:

  • the age of such centenarians is at least 2 hundred years;
  • wood fiber is resistant to corrosion processes and does not deteriorate under the influence of strong acids;
  • the bark contains many tannins that protect their “hosts” from all kinds of parasites, as well as from rot fungus;
  • the log will definitely go under water, since the density of the wood is 1 t/m³, taking into account the humidity of 12%, for this reason such species grow quite slowly;
  • the height of each exceeds 25 meters, and the girth of the trunk reaches more than 200 cm.

huge trunk

All these properties are necessary for ironwood to survive in the harshest climatic conditions. Sudden temperature changes in Russia, African drought or humid European climate cannot harm this natural phenomenon. These types of trees adapt well to any unfavorable environment. To do this, they are equipped with a considerable number of devices, ranging from the unique structure of the trunk/roots to the chemical composition of the bark. In this regard, they are widely used in production:

  • furniture;
  • building structures;
  • cars;
  • cosmetics;
  • decorative elements;
  • underwater technology

Mammoth tusk: a jewel mined in permafrost

Most of our contemporaries are a mammoth - “a monster, mischievous, huge...” A large, disproportionately built elephant. A fierce beast, densely overgrown with dense shiny or long brown and patchy hair. A four-legged hero with heavy tusks at the ready, fearlessly chasing polar bears. Or he runs embarrassedly from a handful of furious bipeds... This is what a mammoth is in the performance of artists from science.
Are mammoths extinct?

It is generally accepted that mammoths lived as long ago as dinosaurs. However, scientists have reliably established that the last herds of mammoths lived on Wrangel Island about three and a half thousand years ago. The Pyramid of Cheops was already more than a thousand years old by that time. Moses was just preparing his fellow tribesmen for a forty-year dessert trip. The Mediterranean volcano Santorini, having exploded, buried the Mycenaean civilization a hundred years ago.

These are herds; individual families of mammoths, according to lovers of circumpolar hunting solitude, exist safely to this day. Whether this is true or not is unknown for sure. However, there is no doubt that in the past mammoths lived everywhere in Europe, Asia, and America.

Permafrost is the best refrigerator for mammoth bones

The mammoth bone cemetery is everywhere: in France, in the Czech Republic, in Ukraine. But only where the earth has been in a state of permafrost for thousands of years is a mammoth ivory kept in its original (or almost original) form. One of the largest burial sites in the world is Yakutia, where large quantities of this highly valuable material are still mined annually. According to experts, potential resources in the North Yakutsk province may be about 450 thousand tons.

Man at all times highly valued the fossil mammoth tusk. Dense, strong, massive, often white, usually yellowish, often colored with natural color by mineral salts, mammoth bone has been used for many centuries as a raw material for bone carving.

A material that is worthily appreciated by kings and rulers all over the world!

Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, the father of Peter the Great, introduced a state monopoly on mammoth ivory back in the mid-seventeenth century. On his initiative, the extraction and supply of mammoth ivory to the bone-carving workshops of Kholmogory and Moscow (Armory Chamber) became permanent.

Peter the Great, fascinated by crafts, carved a snuff box from mammoth bone with his own hands. Foreign craftsmen also liked the material: among the goods traditionally supplied from Russia to the West, there was always a place for the bone of an extinct animal.

The only one allowed

Today, mammoth ivory is the only highly valuable bone material allowed for extraction and use. Elephant tusk, the well-known ivory, has been classified as a prohibited material. Similar decisions were made regarding the sperm whale tooth (due to the complete abandonment of whale hunting) and walrus tusk (which is caught by northern peoples in small quantities).

Moose antler and stream (the tubular femur of large animals) are not capable of producing the visual effect produced by mammoth bone products. The internal glow of the figures, the warm shades of the living body, the unsurpassed plasticity of the smallest details - these are just some of the advantages inherent in mammoth tusk.

Versatility, nobility, uniqueness

The physical qualities of the mammoth tusk massif are unique. Modern technologies are only trying to create substances with properties approaching natural mammoth bone. Allowing for the finest elaboration of details, making it possible to create the illusion of soft draperies of clothing that naturally fall, mammoth tusk has deservedly become the most sought-after material for bone carving.

Mammoth ivory with a homogeneous structure is in particular demand. The uniform coloring of the bone mass, the absence of cracks and other defects allows the artist to create without taking into account the quality of the material. However, the integrity of a solid mammoth bone is already rare and defects in the material force the artist to be more inventive in composition, which ultimately turns into an additional advantage in sculpture.
