Technological properties of VT6C material.

The values of the normal (Young's) modulus of elasticity (E) measured in two-phase titanium alloys of the VT6 type (analogs of the foreign Ti-6Al-4V alloy), according to the scientific and technical literature, can vary from 90 to 145 GPa. The modulus of elasticity is included in the basic equations of the structural strength of the material. Therefore, the observed wide scatter creates the problem of correct selection of the value of E when calculating the strength of aircraft structures of a responsible purpose, and also calls into question the accuracy of calculation models, which imply the constancy and structural insensitivity of the normal modulus of elasticity of the used alloy. The lack of systematic scientific data determined the relevance of conducting experiments that allow to assess the stability of elastic and strength in two-phase titanium alloys of the VT6 type after their long-term exposure at the temperature of manifestation of superplastic deformation, which is 900 °C. The conducted experiments showed that long-term vacuum annealing for 50 hours at 900 °C of sheet blanks from titanium alloy VT6C with an initial average grain size of 1 μm leads to a noticeable decrease (14% in the longitudinal direction) of the normal modulus of elasticity. The average grain size during the 50-hour annealing process increased to 6 μm. Along with the decrease in elastic properties, a noticeable decrease (by ~ 14%) of the strength limit at room temperature was also found. Vacuum annealing at 900 °C preserves the pronounced anisotropy of mechanical properties present in the original sheet, which is inherited due to a slight change in the original crystallographic texture. The revealed nature of the change in mechanical properties in sheets of VT6C titanium alloy after vacuum annealing correlates with structural changes, including changes in phase composition and crystallographic texture.
